More information: This is the Deluxe Edition consisting of the 2 CD edition, a bonus CD called ‘Almost Was’, 7” square 24 page full colour book, plus 3 colour postcards (one autographed by Andy Tillison).
Disc 1 and Disc 2 have a total running time of over 100 minutes. The bonus disc is over 51 minutes.
Now in their 24th year, The Tangent has made 14 albums of original work. Although the band had many different participants in its earlier years the line-up has been relatively stable for more than a decade now, with the first change happening this year with the arrival of Arena, IQ, Rain, Ark and Jadis alumnus John Jowitt (who replaces founder member Jonas Reingold), with Rob Groucutt enlisted as a vital second keyboards player for the band.

The new album ‘Was’ is a distillation of all that The Tangent has been known for. Yes, it's nostalgic - even subtitled ‘A Nostalgia’ - but the nostalgia isn't just through rose tinted spectacles. It sees some of the band's most ambitious work to date - the first album taking us through a multitude of different musical styles, from the warm memories of halcyon days listening to LPs in the 1970s to the battlefields of Vietnam and Nigeria that were raging at the same time. It takes us though applied nostalgia - the media products that allow us to remember the Second World War despite most of us not having been born, or remember being part of a multi-cultural and multi species crew of a starship on a five year long voyage.
The second disc dispenses with lyrics almost entirely and is an instrumental album that fuses many different types of music from many different eras into what the band hopes is a cohesive whole to the listener. It's a suite that features orchestration, a huge amount of brass arrangements, and weaves together 20th century classical styles with Jazz, Prog, Funk, performance DJ techniques and the kitchen sink.
"I have been in awe of Keith Emerson's ‘Five Bridges’ suite since I was in my very early teens" says Andy. "I wanted to create something that had the same ambition to fuse the music around me into one. He did it so well 50 years ago - and it's all I've wanted to do since. And I had 50 years extra musical development to include. This was a really fun experience. And of course I had to pay a certain amount of tribute to the man himself!"
