More information: By the mid-1970s, Pink Floyd had journeyed from the psychedelic underground to the upper echelons of rock’s mainstream. The Dark Side of the Moon (1973) and Wish You Were Here (1975) cemented their global status, uniting adventurous production with radio-friendly accessibility and expansive, long-form conceptual compositions. By 1977, Pink Floyd were no longer cult favourites but one of the most commercially successful and creatively daring groups in the world, with fans eagerly anticipating new material.
In early 1977 that new album arrived in the form of Animals. Loosely inspired by George Orwell’s Animal Farm and reflecting a growing disenchantment with society and the music industry, it revealed a darker, harder-edged Floyd. The supporting tour - dubbed ‘In The Flesh’ - brought this new material to life with an opening set drawn largely from Animals, followed by a second half predominantly showcasing highlights from Wish You Were Here and The Dark Side of the Moon. These shows pushed the band’s theatricality to new heights with inflatable pigs, cutting-edge lighting and a spectacular pyrotechnic ‘waterfall’, offering audiences a visceral encounter with Pink Floyd at their most uncompromising in a vast, elaborately staged arena production.
