More information: In November 1980, Genesis bought Fisher Lane Farm, a farmhouse with an adjoining cowshed near Chiddingfold, Surrey, as their new rehearsal and recording facility. The building was remodelled into a studio in four months before recording for Abacab - the band’s 11th studio album - began in March 1981. The new environment had a productive effect on the writing process as the band wrote enough for a double album, but they discarded one hour's worth of songs that sounded too similar to their past albums.
Production duties were solely credited to the band for the first time on the album with Hugh Padgham as their engineer. The band recorded all their rehearsals prior to deciding on a finished version of each song. The rehearsals were often handed to a local radio station who would air such cuts, and the audience’s reaction went some way to the band finalising each tracks potential for the finished and released album.
Many of these rehearsals are now collated on this CD, which includes versions which remain as different from the commercially released numbers as possible.
Note: Recording quality can vary on these kind of releases.
