Review: Barely one year after 'Planet Earth' comes 'Timeless', the brand new studio album from The Watch.

Hot off an extensive tour in 2010 which touched most of Europe and the USA and Canada ("The Watch plays Genesis") in which the band merged their own music with some Genesis classics for a unique result that has been defined as a must also for all Genesis fans, The Watch are back with a new studio breakthrough: borrowing a theme from Genesis's very first album "From Genesis to Revelation" and re-shaping it to create brand new songs bound to become classics. Keeping the original musical flavour that allowed the very young members of Genesis to prove their talent to the world, but adding the typical musical flair and energy people know and love from The Watch.

The result is a 10 song album, 7 original songs and 3 reinterpretations of very early '69 - '70 Genesis tracks. On one of these John Hackett joins the band with his flute and another one is a great performance of Genesis's Stagnation, taken from the 2010 shows giving newcomers an idea of how incredible and 'timeless' that music and this band can sound when performing Genesis.

Review: If you listen to the keyboards, it’s as if you are listening to Tony Banks; if you listen to the guitar, you see Hackett in front of your eyes; when you hear the drums, you find yourself in Phil Collins territory, whilst the main ingredient remains the fantastic Simone Rossetti, who even plays some flute, making 'Damage Mode' sound like an outtake from Trespass, Nursery Cryme or Foxtrot! His voice even contains that slight harshness that made Gabriel’s voice so typical and original. Review: Only seconds into “DNAlien” and it's vintage Genesis that is all over you again like a rash. Mixed in Pisa earlier this year, the song contains loads and loads of mellotron sounds and stunning drumming. New keyboard player Sergio Taglioni certainly leaves his mark with his dramatic yet romantic contribution on piano during “The Ghost And The Teenager." The further this song evolves the closer it gets to some real vintage Genesis material, as guitarist Valerio Vado also adds that unmistakeable Steve Hackett touch.

I’m convinced there are people out there who have waited 30 years for this, an album which can rub shoulders with Trespass, Nursery Crime and Foxtrot, because this is the best album Genesis never made! (ProgressiveWorld)

Review: Twilight by The Night Watch is the first CD to be released by the band that is now The Watch! A must for early Genesis fans!

One would swear vocalist SIMONE ROSETTI was PETER GABRIEL reincarnate, and the NIGHT WATCH’s music is so much like that of early GENESIS one wonders if the band would ever have existed without the old masters. Plagiarism, however, never sounded so good and surely the guys can't be condoned for pulling it off so successfully. Review: For the last 9 years John Wesley has been part of Porcupine Tree's live set up, bolstering the band's guitar sound and performing backing vocals. In addition to this he is a respected song writer and performer in his own right.

The Lilypad Suite is a collection of songs written over the last few years and recorded recently at RedRoom Recorders in Tampa. John has described the process behind the recording of this release: "As I was writing the songs that would be a part of my next album, Disconnect, I noticed a consistent theme running through several of them. I assembled those songs, got the team together and decided that we would record them and release them as a separate collection. This collection has become The Lilypad Suite.". The mixing and mastering was handled by UK based Grammy winning engineer, Steven Orchard, who has previously worked with Porcupine Tree, Chris Cornell, U2, Jeff Beck, Kate Bush and more.

Review: John Wetton’s sixth solo album is shaping up to be a true career landmark for the British singer/songwriter. In January 2011, with a brief break in between touring commitments for the 30th Anniversary of U.K. and a US Asia tour, he headed over to California to write and record with former Yes, World Trade and Yoso producer and multi-instrumentist Billy Sherwood.

After intense studio recording work, Wetton emerged with a strong bunch of new songs which he describes as "an Anglo-American music document, a true autobiographical journey". Indeed 'Raised in Captivity' is a record that truly sums up several of the musical elements that have shaped Wetton’s career. Firstly a lot of his former (and current) musical partners are appearing on this new album: Robert Fripp (King Crimson), Eddie Jobson (UK), Mick Box (Uriah Heep), Steve Hackett (Genesis), Steve Morse (Deep Purple) and of course Geoff Downes of Asia.

Musically, the record intends to offer a more rocking aspect of Wetton’s songwriting and performing abilities, akin to his now classic album 'Battlelines', though not forgetting his abilities to perform on majestic harmonies over symphonic musical tapestries – particularly poignant is his duet with Dutch singer Anneke Van Giersbergen on 'Mighty Rivers' the closing song of the album.

John Wetton has been a member of several prominent British bands of the 70s. After two albums with Family he joined King Crimson from 1972 to 1974, before working with Roxy Music and Uriah Heep. In 1977, with former Crimson band mate and drummer Bill Bruford, he co-founded U.K., which also featured guitarist Allan Holdsworth and keyboardist/violinist Eddie Jobson.

After U.K.’s demise, John decided to turn his attentions to a solo career and entered the studio to record 'Caught in the Crossfire', an album that, in hindsight, shows a logical bridge from the music of U.K. to the eventual music of Asia, showcasing Wetton’s love for short and simple melodies over the lengthy strains of progressive rock.

In 1982, John became part of the Supergroup Asia, together with Steve Howe, Carl Palmer and Geoff Downes. This 'fab four' of progressive pop would rule radio and record sales, with their debut album becoming the biggest selling album of the year and giving us the worldwide hit 'Heat of the Moment'.

Wetton remained prolific with four more solo studio albums and several collaborative efforts over the years. However it was at a John Wetton fan convention held in 2002 in Allentown, PA that he started working again with Geoff Downes. This collaboration brought first two new songs which appeared on Wetton’s 'Rock of Faith' album and they later recorded the successful 'iCon' albums, followed in early 2006 by the anticipated reunion of Asia’s original lineup, bringing about two successful new studio albums 'Phoenix' in 2008 and 'Omega' in 2010.

John Wetton’s continued success over the decades and his impressive legacy has certainly stood the test of time. 'Raised in Captivity' is just the latest gem in an ongoing list of musical works that will certainly stand tall amongst the amazing musical works he produced during the years.

Review: Ray Wilson started his music career with the group Stiltskin in the mid-1990s. Stiltskin, considered a Scottish grunge band, released the silver status album “The Mind’s Eye” (1994). Its number one debut single “Inside” reached international success being used as backing melody for a Levi’s advert. However, disputes within the band and with the record label resulted in the split of the band after only one album. Nonetheless, Ray Wilson’s voice and singing had left an impression in the music scene and convinced Genesis members Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford to engage Wilson as lead singer after Phil Collins had departed the band in 1996. Together they released the album “Calling All Stations” (1997), an attempt of returning to Genesis’ progressive roots and being an album-oriented band. The album became Genesis’ fourth best selling album. "Propaganda Man" is a return to a much more intimate sound, very much a reflection of Ray’s live performances. A deeply insightful album, the well crafted arrangements allow Ray’s vocals to express the emotions throughout the lyrics. Often purely Ray and acoustic guitar. An album with beauty and angst, tension and repose, reflection and resolve; “Propaganda Man” gives the listener a special connection that only an accomplished singer/ songwriter can achieve. It has already been regarded as possibly his best album so far, from ‘Classic Rock’ in the UK.

Review: Grace for Drowning, the new solo double album from Porcupine Tree frontman Steven Wilson.

Steven Wilson is a twice Grammy-nominated producer, writer and performer, best known as founder and front man of British rock band Porcupine Tree. He has also produced and /or mixed albums for artists as diverse as Swedish metal band Opeth, Norwegian chanteuse Anja Garbarek, and progressive rock institution King Crimson. Last year, he also co-wrote and sang a track from Pendulum’s number one album ‘Immersion’.

Porcupine Tree’s latest album The Incident went top 30 in both the UK and USA, and the world tour climaxed with sold out shows in October last year at Royal Albert Hall in London and Radio City Music Hall in New York.

Grace for Drowning is the second album released under Wilson’s own name, and builds on the artistic inroads he forged with 2009’s exceptionally well-received Insurgentes.

A double album (‘two 40-45 minute albums in the same package’) Wilson has described the new album as "my biggest project to date".

Review: Acclaimed for his work with Porcupine Tree, Opeth and Anja Garbarek, amongst others, Steven Wilson’s now releases his debut album--Insurgentes. Comprising 10 new tracks that range from ballads and anthems to all-out industrial noise assaults, the dark, cinematic, and richly textured disc represents two years’ worth of creative output and numerous recording sessions worldwide in studios from Mexico City to Japan and Israel.

While Wilson is a member of several bands, including Blackfield, No-Man, and Bass Communion, he explains that “when I began writing these songs, I quickly realized that they would be best suited to an album under my own name. It was an intuitive, almost unconscious writing process that resulted in a kind of ‘poetry of melancholy'.”

Wilson recruited a stellar cast of guests to work on the album including bassist Tony Levin, Porcupine Tree drummer Gavin Harrison, and keyboardist Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater), alongside Japanese Koto player Michiyo Yagi, British guitarist Sand Snowman, and jazz flautist and saxophonist Theo Travis. The final product inhabits a similar experimental realm as recent albums by Thom Yorke, Portishead, and Nine Inch Nails.

Review: THE WINTER TREE (formerly MAGUS) is a band formed by composer/multi-instrumentalist Andrew Laitres (a.k.a. Andrew Robinson) with vocalist/guitarist Mark Bond and his wife Deb Bond on keyboards. MAGUS was formed by Andrew in 1985 after a 4 year stint on the regional cover band circuit. Andrew wanted to focus his time and talents on creating original compositions. Several demos and cassette releases were issued between 1987 and 1993. At a New York City YES fan convention in 1994 Andrew noticed many vendors selling Progressive Rock CDs and merchandise. This inspired him to record the first full length MAGUS CD, the self-titled debut, released in 1995.

The self-titled debut by The Winter Tree is a synthesis of many different musical styles and genres: rock, folk, electronic, and ambient, among others. These elements combine to create a fascinating and cohesive work that should satisfy the progrock enthusiast as well as a diverse listening public.

Review: WolfSpring is a new band created by JP Louveton, guitarist and singer of the progressive French band Nemo. JP wanted to create a new musical pallete that was centered more around the guitar, and this project gathers musicians of various influences: Julian Clemens (English-speaking singer), Ludovic Moro-Sibilot (Metal drummer) and Guillaume Fontaine on keyboards, who also played in Nemo.

The debut album, simply called 'WolfSpring', contains 8 tracks with a strong personality, where virtuosity is always turned to a music that’s complex, rich and yet within the reach of anybody. You will maybe hear some Led Zeppelin, Muse, Porcupine Tree or Pink Floyd influences, but you will never accuse the band of plagiarism, as they interpret the past to create music for today.

Review: Founder member and keyboard player of BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST, Woolly Wolstenholme was arguably the symphonic and “progressive” influence within the band. His Mellotron playing and songs graced many classic BJH albums between 1970 – 1978. Departing in 1979 for a solo career he recorded the album “Maestoso” for Polydor before leaving music after an aborted second album. Teaming up with John Lees in his incarnation of BJH in 1998 he also resurrected his solo career with the band MAESTOSO. This collection draws from his early solo work and his acclaimed albums “One Drop in Dry World” (2004), “Grim” (2006) and “Caterwauling” (2007).
