Review: Paatos took a long break between 2008 and 2010, after getting side-tracked by band turmoil and life in general. But Breathing marks the return of Paatos, and is their fifth (and best) album.

Petronella, Huxflux and Peter spent about a year writing and recording and was joined by bassist Rockis. Much love and care was spent on this album, which represents a rebirth for Paatos into a more mature entity with a clearer voice.

Review: Panic Room are one of three new bands formed from the ashes of the original incarnation of Welsh celtic/prog band Karnataka, made up from Jon Edwards (keys), Paul Davies (guitar), Gavin Griffiths (drums) and Anne-Marie Helder (vocals and flute) from that band, plus Swansea bass virtuoso Alun Vaughan on bass. Their debut album has been three years in the making, and has finally appeared.

With four members of the old lineup of Karnataka in the band, comparisons are going to be inevitable. But while there are plenty of echoes of the previous band, this is certainly no simple pastiche of Karnataka’s music. It’s an awful lot more varied, for a start.

Pär also wrote a concerto in Baroque style as well as other pieces. As a pianist Pär has given recitals in Scandinavia, France, Italy, England and USA. Pianosolos has also been incorporated frequently in PLP concerts including both classical pieces as well as Pärs own compositions. Pär studied piano for Mrs. Ani Gazarian who was a pupil of the great Alfred CORTOT. Pär started his career as professional organist at the early age of 15 playing in churches around Enköping Sweden. He studied the instrument for several teachers in both Sweden and France including such prestigious names as Marie Claire Alain. Although the harpsichord was predominant during Pärs classical career he gave several organ concerts in USA, Italy, France and Sweden. Incorporating the sonorities of the church organ has become an important part of PLPs unique sound both on record and at live concerts. Pär is a composer of classical music with regards to the glorious music of the great European classical tradition. He is also a composer of avant-garde progressive rock and alternative music.

In 2004 Pavlov's Dog appeared from nowhere, and gave one concert with the original lineup, due to the 30th anniversary of Pampered Menial. On vocals, of course, was David Surkamp. Fans flew to St. Louis from all over the world, and the response blew all expectations. After the anniversary concert the band around Surkamp & Safron was completed by young musicians, and 2010 finally sees the relase of a new album called Echo & Boo - their first release in 35 years!

Review: RPWL bassist Chris Postl has launched his first solo CD, and what a great start! For his ambitious project 'Parzivals Eye' he got support from some great musicians, among them the voices of Christina Booth (Magenta) and Alan Reed (Pallas). Ian Bairnson, guitarist with Alan Parsons Project, took care of the fiery guitar solos.

'Fragments' is by far the most RPWL-like solo effort: self-indulgent midtempo songs with gripping Floyd-like harmony vocals form its cornerstones, like in 'Wide World'. This is no surprise as Postl contributes a lot to the creation of RPWL songs, even though he is officially 'just' RPWL's bassist.

Review: Pyre of Dreams is quite possibly the most accomplished album by Persephone's Dream yet. Chock full of varied instrumentation, a vast array of vocalists, and eclectic songwriting, it is easily their most diverse work. It still treads the same moody, atmosphere-laden prog music they're so well known for, but it also adds more varied elements, including bits of gothic darkness, electronica, and folky landscapes.

In days where prog is being reinvented into nothing more than alternative rock, it is refreshing to find an artist who refuses to commercialise his music, instead holding on tightly to the very essence of all that made classic prog great, with shades of Van der Graaf Generator, Pink Floyd, Genesis and ELP. The lengthy audaciously complex instrumentals, accompanied by slabs of progtastic lyrics, make this one of the best examples of symphonic prog in recent years. Having heard it many times the music has actually embedded itself into my conscious and stamped an indelible impression on me. The album is wildly inventive and brimming over with a cacophony of eargasmic soundscapes, designed for a captivating headphone experience. Number Seven, a slightly surreal, humourous "hero's journey" features jazzy instrumental interplay and detailed arrangements. Review: Anthony Phillips is perhaps best known as the original guitarist in Genesis. Ant left the band in 1970 following the release of Trespass. He began his solo career in earnest in the mid seventies with the release of the album The Geese and The Ghost. Since then he has released a number of critically acclaimed albums and forged a loyal and devoted fan base. In 2008 Anthony Phillips reissued his first two albums in remastered format. The latest album from Anthony Phillips back catalogue to receive the remastered treatment is Sides. Sides was originally released in 1979 and features performances from other progressive rock legends such as Mike Giles and John G Perry alongside Ant. The album is possibly the most rock oriented album to come from Anthony Phillips and includes the tracks Nightmare and Um and Aargh. The album has been unavailable for some time and this reissue will follow on from the reissue of The Geese and the Ghost and Wise After The Event and appeal to the large and dedicated fan base one would expect from a former member of Genesis.

Review: Three years after the well-received 'A Sleeper´s Awakening', a new album from Mattis Sorum´s Pictorial Wand has finally arrived. 'Face of our Fathers' is an album, compared to the former 'A Sleeper´s Awakening' a little more to the point maybe, a little more focused on the vocals, and clearer themes on each song. But the variation from the last album is absolutely there, with acoustic passages roaming through heavy music and further into the fantastic world of the analogue synths. A couple of great new vocalists and instrumentalists have been brought onto the set this time, together with some from the former album. It is a concept-album, like the Sleeper-album of course, and we follow the destiny of four characters fighting for what they believe in. The main theme of this album is how the former generations leave behind an inheritance for the next, and how they in turn try to deal with it. We will see a pulling between pride, reason, love and hope in the struggle for their own needs and believes and the fulfilling of what is expected of them from the former generations. The circle ends with father and son facing each other on the battlefield…

Review: 2010 was a landmark year for The Pineapple Thief. The band released their latest album, the critically acclaimed Someone Here Is Missing (‘extremely classy and frequently mesmerising’ Classic Rock), along with the Show A Little Love EP (‘it is here that the real magic of a band like TPT shines through’ Classic Rock Prog) and followed a string of festival performances with a European tour.

While these releases, along with 2008’s Tightly Unwound, were many people’s introduction to the band they have actually spent the past ten years quietly building up a dedicated fan base across the globe, selling over 25,000 records and nurturing their ‘bittersweet’ progressive sound. This release is the second in a series of re-mastered reissues from the band’s back catalogue.

Variations On A Dream was the band’s third studio album and was originally released in 2004 on the Cyclops label. Bruce has re-mixed and re-mastered the album for this Kscope edition. It is also presented in the same way as the originally limited double album release with the 8 Days album (limited to 1000 copies and never released separately) on CD 2.

Review: Poor Genetic Material was founded by Stefan Glomb (guitar) and Philipp Jaehne (keyboards) as an experimental project mainly working on soundtrack material. When they met German art rock band Alias Eye in late 2000, opportunity was there to work on more song-oriented material. Singer Philip Griffiths (son of the legendary Beggars Opera singer Martin Griffiths) joined the original duo to work and record together. During the last few years Poor Genetic Material have made a name for themselves in the prog- and artrock scene. The seasons series, a long term project covering four albums (Summerland, Leap into Fall, Winter’s Edge and Spring Tidings), generated a lot of interest for the band. Island Noises is a double concept album based on The tempest by William Shakespeare. Yet, the album does not try to re-tell the but rather explores certain ideas, atmospheres and characters plot of the original play and so becomes a work in its own right. “Why Shakespeare?” “Why The Tempest?” you may ask. Well, there’s a sorcerer, a spirit of the air, a monstrous creature, there is romance and attempted murder, it’s about the stuff that dreams are made on ... sounds like a prog-concept album? – Exactly!

Review: PRYMARY is a melodic progressive rock/metal band from Southern California and consists of Jackson Heskett (Vocals), Sean Entrikin (Guitars), Rob Young (Bass), Neil McQueen (Keyboards), and Chris Quirarte (Drums) . The band debuted on the scene in 2003 with its self-titled album and opened for bands such as Fates Warning, Kamelot, and King's X. 2003 also marked the first out of state performance at the renowned ProgPower Festival in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2005, the band travel to Amsterdam, Holland for their first European performance at the Headway Festival. "The Enemy Inside" is the long awaited 3rd album from Prymary. This time around shows Prymary transcending their past achievements and creating a collage of stories that are independent and yet united in the themes of selfdestruction and dreams unfulfilled. Musically the band shows a further refinement of songwriting and musicianship with songs that are more concise in musical statement, while still having the grand arrangements that Prymary is known for. As is becoming a Prymary trademark, the band has once again given special attention to combining music and lyrics together to convey the mood or feel of the song. This is simultaneously the heaviest, technical, most prog, and emotional Prymary album to date.

Review: Puppet Show are a yound American band whose debut CD is Prog with a capital 'P'! Their music is firmly rooted in the 70's while adding some of the drama and andst of Fish-era Marillion. Influences of all the major 70's Prog bands have been absorbed with perhaps Genesis and UK with a generous helping of ELP dominating. There are plenty of furious instrumental sections but also introspective sections featuring acoustic guitar and gentle Mellotron sounds. Five long tracks plus a short intro, clocking in at over 55 minutes.

In March 2009 they released their second longplayer ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ on Superball Music, a rockier and more electronic proposition than its predecessor, it was typical of their ability to fuse seemingly paradoxical ambitions and tastes.
