Review: Released together for the first time ever the first three Candlelight Opeth albums (Orchid, Morningrise and My Arms Your Hearse).

This triple CD set is the perfect way to experience the early years of this now legendary band and witness firsthand the albums that cemented the bands place in the metal big league. Opeth recorded debut album, Orchid, with producer Dan Swanö in April 1994, Orchid tested the boundaries of traditional death metal, featuring acoustic guitars, piano, and clean vocals. Allmusic called Orchid "brilliant", "startlingly unique", and "a far-beyond-epic prog/death monstrosity exuding equal parts beauty and brutality". After a few live shows in the United Kingdom, Opeth returned to the studio in March 1996 to begin work on a second album, again produced by Dan Swanö. Morningrise was released in Europe on June 24, 1996. With only five songs and lasting 66 minutes, the album featured Opeth's longest song, the twenty-minute "Black Rose Immortal". Morningrise was a critical success, with
Allmusic giving the album four stars. Opeth began work on its third album, with noted Swedish producer Fredrik Nordström, at Studio Fredman in August 1997. My Arms, Your Hearse was released on August 18, 1998, to critical acclaim. As Opeth's first international release, the album exposed the band to a wider global audience. My Arms, Your Hearse marked the beginning of a shift in the band's sound, focusing less on guitar harmonies and more heavily on progressive metal riffs.

Review: Martin Orford is best know for his 26-year career as keyboardist and main songwriter with legendary progressive rock band IQ, though he was also a significant player for many years in Jadis and also the John Wetton band. The album features an all-star line-up including John Wetton (Asia), Nick D’Virgilio and Dave Meros (Spock’s Beard), John Mitchell (It Bites/ Arena), Dave Oberlé (Gryphon), Gary Chandler (Jadis) and Steve Thorne. Martin describes the album as “unashamedly retro and proud of it”, and the overall theme of the CD reflects a celebration of traditional ways and a rejection of the less attractive aspects of the 21st century. An outspoken critic of the Internet and the “free music” culture, Martin recently announced his complete withdrawal from the music industry at the end of 2008, and this album provides a fitting and poignant farewell.

Blood is a fascinating album at the crossroads between rock and progressive metal. Music, that alternates between atmospherically dense and aggressively demanding elements, while effortlessly transcending barriers between different styles and genres. Following its impressive predecessors, Office Of Strategic Influence (2003) and Free (2006), Blood is the third release by Kevin Moore and Jim Matheos. O.S.I. unites two exceptional composers who share their penchant for the unusual and are on the same artistic wavelength. “We have different musical tastes but an unspoken musical understanding" Moore enthuses.

Along with Moore and Matheos, Blood features Porcupine Tree drummer Gavin Harrison. There’s also a guest appearance by Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth) on ‘Stockholm’, which the Swedish musician composed together with the two O.S.I. masterminds. “I think it was Kevin’s idea to have a guest vocalist. He asked me if I had any suggestions and I immediately thought of Mikael,” Matheos explains. “It was Mikael’s choice, we gave him several songs to pick from. Mikael wrote the lyrics and melody and recorded his parts at home in Sweden.” Moore and Matheos took care of the album’s production themselves, while the mix was done with Grammy winner Phil Magnotti. Blood is an ambitious album recorded by real masters of their trade.

Review: OSI is a project by Jim Matheos and Kevin Moore.

'Office of Strategic Influence' was released in 2003, followed by 'Free' in 2006. 'Blood' was released in April 2009, and includes guests Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree) and Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth). Past participants include Mike Portnoy on the first two albums, Sean Malone and Steven Wilson on the debut, and Joey Vera on 'Free'.

'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' is a Pink Floyd cover performed by Kevin Moore and Mike Portnoy. 'New Mama' is a Neil Young cover performed by Kevin Moore. 'The Thing That Never Was' is the original 'Looks Like Rain' demo performed by Jim Matheos and Mike Portnoy.

The Multimedia Section is approximately 19 minutes long and includes a concept piece directed and edited by Kevin Moore for "Horsehoes and B-52s" as well as two separate documentary style clips shot at Carriage House Studios during the recording of the album.

It’s an open exploration of music and the soul. For over 25 years, the Ozrics have experienced the vicissitudes of the rock and roll life. The band has flourished through a number of line-up changes, spawned several side projects, created their own record label, put out close to 25 albums, scored a hit record and sold over a million albums worldwide. And yet, the basic motivation behind the band’s existence has never wavered. Their signature blend of hippy aesthetics and raver electronics with spiraling guitars, textured waves of keyboard and midi samplers, and supergroovy bass and drum rhythms continues to delight fans across the world to this day. Erpland was the band’s eighth release and was originally released in 1990 and is considered by many fans as one of their finest works. The album has been remastered for this 2 disc set.

Disc 2 is a DVD featuring the first authorised released of the much sought after Brixton Fridge gig which has been lost for 20 years and only previously available on bootlegged VHS tapes. The gig was recorded in May 1991 and features the classic line-up of Ed, Joie, Jon, Roly, Merv and Paul Hankin.
