Review: Kaipa are back with their 10th studio album ”In the wake of evolution”.

The band continues the time-honoured Kaipa tradition but as always they’re simultaneously looking for new challenges hiding by the roadside. The new album is an emotional and powerful blast straight into the future powered by fragile fragments from memory lane. Kaipa combine progressive rock epics with folk influences and melodic songwriting.

Kaipa was originally formed by Hans Lundin in 1973 and their debut album was released in 1975. The first version of Kaipa (1973-1982) recorded five albums and became the leading Scandinavian progressive rock band. In 2002 Hans reformed the band and invited original Kaipa guitar player Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings, Transatlantic) to participate in the recording of the come back album “Notes from the past” together with Morgan Ågren (Zappa), Jonas Reingold (The Flower Kings, Karmakanic), Patrik Lundström (Ritual) and Aleena Gibson. This line-up recorded two more remarkable albums “Keyholder” 2003 and “Mindrevolutions” 2005.

“Angling feelings” 2007 was the first Kaipa album with new guitar player Per Nilsson. Kaipa’s mastermind and keyboard player Hans Lundin and Per are old friends and worked together recording the album “Hagen: Corridors of time” in the late 90’s. Per is nowadays mostly famous as the lead guitar player in Swedish metal band Scar Symmetry.

Kaipa definitely proves that they are one of the leading outfits in today’s world of innovative and progressive music. They are not afraid of plunging into new areas while they still carry their glorious traditions with pride into a new era.

Review: As expansive and emotive a statement of progressive art rock music as you will hear this year with over 75 minutes of memorable melodies to savour. It’s an excellent mix of mostly instrumental tracks with some stunning vocals which has expanded way beyond the horizons of earlier KARFAGEN, but still retains the much loved sounds that reminds us of bands such as CAMEL and FOCUS which is built upon with the debut of local guitarist ALEXANDR PAVLOV who’s playing is masterful. For the first time there is vocals on three tracks by MARINA ZACHAROVA a female vocalist in the tradition of Celtic flavoured bands such as MOSTLY AUTUMN, MAGENTA and THE REASONING, a sound that creates that special magic the listener is always seeking, with vocals that heighten and compliment the track rather than dominate.

Review: KARMAKANIC mastermind / bassist Jonas Reingold isn't out to re-invent the progressive rock wheel with the band's new album, “In A Perfect World”. On the contrary, in a genre that is overpopulated with artists obsessed with often inhuman instrumental fireworks, he has delivered a package that stands out for being organic, warm, and decidedly human. And while lines can be drawn to prog rock greats like Dream Theater, Ayreon and Fates Warning, it's the hints of everything from Styx to Deep Purple to The Beatles to Yes and make KARMAKANIC'S latest outing a seven course feast that will leave the listener hungry for more.

A member of prog rock cult favorites The Flower Kings since 1999, Reingold has released four albums under the KARMAKANIC banner since 2002. “In A Perfect World” is an unexpectedly smooth flow of musical styles from beginning to end. Steeped in an instantly recognizable '70s vibe, each of the seven tracks featured on the album have their own unique personalities without sounding mismatched. Whether it’s the opening romp of ‘1969’ or the smokey blues 10 minute outro of ‘When Fear Came To Town’, “In A Perfect World” never derails itself under the weight of its own creative genius.

“Normally I try to work with a couple themes,” Reingold explains. “The opening theme on '1969', for example, it reappears in the song a number of times in different shapes, different keys and tonalities, a different vibe, but I try not to change the ideas I'm working with too much. I try to keep a core running through the whole song. If you skip five minutes into the song it shouldn't be a different song. That's my main goal; therefore I try to keep things simple in terms of ideas. If I have three melodic themes going on I stick to them. I try not to put in too much information.”

This time out, however, Reingold’s big focus was on the lyrics for “In A Perfect World’s” seven tracks. As inspired as he was to write the music, without an equal amount of time spent on the lyrics he believes the album would be lacking a backbone. Because of his lyrical focus, fans will find “In A Perfect World” much stronger than any of the band’s previous releases.

Review: 'Realm Of Shadows' is the third album from the Dutch masters of symphonic rock. KNIGHT AREA creates harder edged progressive rock in the vein of ARENA, MARILLION, and DREAM THEATER.
