Review: Steve Hackett is renowned as one of the world’s most talented and innovative rock musicians. As lead guitarist with the star-strewn line-up of 1970s Genesis he made an indelible impression on the fabric of classic rock. In 1977, Steve embarked on a solo career that has spawned literally dozens of albums, drawing on influences from blues, jazz, classical and ethnic music. Along the way he has collaborated with many of the music world’s leading lights, Steve Howe, Brian May, John Wetton and Chris Squire chief amongst them.

Beyond The Shrouded Horizon bears yet further witness to the extraordinary scope of Steve’s creativity: exquisite acoustic vignettes and towering rock and orchestral arrangements traverse continents of subject and style and yet the album remains cohesive to the end, demanding attention for a full fifty-eight minutes.

A worthy successor to Tunnel’s, Steve’s latest studio album is underpinned by the regular electric band of King, O’Toole, Beggs, Townsend and Amanda Lehmann, and features stellar guest performances from Chris Squire and Simon Phillips.

Review: Most of the content on this DVD was taken from a performance filmed on the 8th of November 1978 for German television. The concert recording was the last date on the hugely successful tour although only the fourteenth concert the band had played so from a historical point of view this was right at the start of Steve's solo career and as such captures a moment in time. As an added bonus tracks filmed at the same time as this performance, but not included in the broadcast, have been added to this DVD, and the set now represents the actual running order of the complete performance. NTSC format.

Spectral’s bonus material includes fascinating alternate studio versions of Every Day, Virgin and the Gypsy, Tigermoth and The Ballad of the Decomposing Man (featuring The Office Party). Also the 12” single version of Clocks released in September 1979 and the live cuts which originally appeared on the B side - an acoustic set of Etude In A min., Blood on the Rooftops excerpt, Horizons & Kim and a version of Tigermoth. The live recordings were made on 11th June 1979 at the Pavillion de Paris.

Spectral Mornings was arguably the definitive Hackett album of the seventies. The strong lyrical instrumentals combined with the cutting edge of Hackett's guitar style not only received critical acclaim but were consistently used for many films and TV programmes.

The bonus material comprises 'Guitar Boogie', an encore favourite recorded at the time of the album, a 12-inch version of 'Walking Through Walls' which only ever appeared on the original US release, and the recording of 'Time Lapse At Milton Keynes' which was the B-side to the 'Cell 151' 12-inch single.

For Highly Strung the regular studio team of Hackett & Magnus were joined by future Marillion drummer Ian Mosely for another successful album which produced the hit single “Cell 151”

Bonus tracks are a previously unreleased live version of Ace Of Wands recorded at the Drury Lane Theatre 1979 with Steve’s original live band and the long lost full 17 minute version of Shadow of the Hierophant which showcases Phil Collins’ astounding drumming. The tape of this was recently unearthed when clearing out Steve’s dad’s garden shed!

Originally released in 1975, Voyage Of The Acolyte is Steve’s first solo recording, made while still a member of Genesis and believed by many to be the best album Genesis never made! Includes guest performances from Phil Colllins & Mike Rutherford. Chris Welch raved in his review and thousands of fans across the world agreed.

Bonus tracks are the recording of 'Tales of the Riverbank' which originally appeared as the B-side to 'Hope I Don't Wake', the original version of 'Second Chance', commissioned for the TV series of the same name, and a live version of 'The Air-Conditioned Nightmare' recorded at 1981's Reading Festival with Steve's then touring band of Ian Mosley, John Hackett, Nick Magnus and Chas Cronk.

Cured was a UK Top 20 album which saw Hackett taking a much more studio based pop approach and abandoning the group feel for a high tech sound, though still working with regular collaborator Nick Magnus. The album features the first recording of the (then) revolutionary Linndrum.
