Review: New Blood is a continuum of Peter’s previous ‘Scratch My Back’ album - the song-swap project where he covered the songs of others, all to an orchestral backing. Thanks to the precise arrangements by John Metcalf and Peter, the treatment was so successful that Peter very quickly knew where he wanted to take it next, and work began to apply the same principals to his own songs.

Great care has been taken – and much discussion shared – in deciding what songs were included on New Blood. It wasn’t simply a case of giving the big numbers an orchestral re-rub. Indeed, some of the big hits are missing in favour of lesser-known material. But the intention wasn’t a deliberate obliqueness; it was more a case of finding the songs that would be enhanced by the massed strings, brass, woodwind and percussion.

“The orchestra provides different dimensions to the music that weren’t there initially,” confirms Peter. “Rock artists work slowly in studios, building up layer by layer, and one of the great, powerful advantages of an orchestra is all these musicians playing at one moment with all sorts of colours and personalities.”

And in front of orchestra, taking centre stage when necessary, retreating into the shadows when not, is Peter’s rich voice. Retaining its trademark emotive power, it returns to lyrics written 20 or 30 years ago, reinvesting them with new meaning and heightened poignancy.

Review: The 'Scratch My Back' album project is the first part of a series of song exchanges in which Peter Gabriel and other leading artists reinterpret each other’s songs. To help craft his recording of the album’s eclectic array of cult favourites and classic tracks, Gabriel enlisted former Durutti Column member John Metcalfe, composer, arranger and the expertise of producer Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’, Lou Reed’s ‘Berlin’) and engineer, mixer and producer Tchad Blake (Suzanne Vega, Sheryl Crow, Tom Waits). Gabriel describes this as a very personal record with twelve songs performed only with orchestral instruments and voice. He made the choice not to include guitar or drums. The album’s richly diverse sounds include the sparse romance of Lou Reed’s ‘The Power of the Heart’, the powerful musical journey of Elbow’s ‘Mirrorball’ and an epic arrangement of Arcade Fire’s ‘My Body Is A Cage’. Gabriel and his collaborators recorded the album at George Martin’s Air Lyndhurst Studios and the Real World Temple with further editing and mixing at his own Real World Studio in Wiltshire.

Review: Gazpacho were formed in Oslo in 1996 by childhood friends Jon-Arne Vilbo and Thomas Andersen along with Jan-Henrik Ohme (later joined by Mikael Krømer, Robert R Johansen and Kristian Torp). The band have honed their unique sound, and a substantial international fan-base, over a string of critically acclaimed albums and numerous tours, including several with long-time supporters Marillion.

Missa Atropo, the latest album from Gazpacho, was released earlier this year on Kscope. The album was described by Classic Rock as 'finely crafted, darkly atmospheric stuff' and following its release the band embarked on a European tour.

London captures the band's gig on this tour at the legendary Dingwalls venue in Camden. Classic Rock Prog described the evening as 'sublime' going on to state, 'with new album Missa Atropos to draw from as well as a catalogue of songs that draw favourable comparison with both Radiohead and a more sedate Muse, they fill the best part of two hours with invention and brio.'

Formed in Oslo in 1996 by childhood friends Jon-Arne Vilbo and Thomas Andersen along with Jan-Henrik Ohme (later joined by Mikael Krømer, Robert R Johansen and Kristian Torp), Gazpacho have honed their unique sound over a string of critically acclaimed albums and numerous tours, including several with long-time supporters Marillion.

These albums and tours, and the internet and word-of-mouth praise that have greeted them, have helped the band build a substantial international fan base. All the band’s releases until this point have either been self-released or on Marillion’s Racket Records label but the band have now signed to Kscope who are set to give an international release to the band’s latest album Missa Atropos, which has previously only been available in Germany.

The follow-up to 2009’s Tick Tock (Album Of The Month, Eclipsed), Missa Atropos is an ambitious concept album. Dealing with themes of death, fear and loneliness, it combines the band’s musical skills and haunting songwriting to create a beautiful and hypnotic piece of art. Darker than the band’s previous two albums, it still features many of the distinctive characteristic’s of a Gazpacho album, with ambient passages, violin and classical music, elements of world music as well as real samples of coded information sent during the cold war on short wave radio.

Review: East Of Eden is Peter Gee’s brand new solo album. It is Peter Gee’s fourth solo album release and features stunning lead vocals from Damian Wilson (Threshold, Rick Wakeman) and Steve Thorne (Solo Artist, Jadis) and drums from Steve Christey (Jadis). This album is a good mixture of powerful rock songs, like “Arabia”, which has echoes of Led Zeppelin and “The Ends Of The Earth”, which has all the emotion of Camel – right through to some beautiful melodic songs like “Beautiful To Me” and “Andrea”. But East Of Eden also offers some great groove tracks in “Falling Star” and “I Want Out” as well as six highly original and accomplished instrumental tracks which vary in style from the Mike Oldfield and Pink Floydesque “One Day We’ll Meet Again” through to the choral beauty of “Hear Our Cry”. All in all, this is a beautiful, powerful and highly melodic album with some great vocal and guitar performances.

If you like good melodic songs and strong instrumental passages in the vein of Pendragon, Camel and Pink Floyd, then you should enjoy this!

Review: Gentle Giant was considered to be one of the most experimental bands in the genre (as well as one of the most experimental rock bands of the 1970s). Their music was considered complex even by progressive rock standards, drawing on a broad swathe of music including folk, soul, jazz, and classical music. A collection of music drawing from the band’s first 6 albums including their 'The Power And The Glory album'. From this collection you get a good idea of what the Giant was all about. A very good starting point for beginners.

Review: The music of Gourishankar(from Russia) is a kaleidoscope of sounds - symphonic, neo, jazz rock, fusion, acoustic, metal, art rock, folk, eletronic, classical, you name it! The difference of this band from the dozens of others who attempt to mix these styles is the fact that their songs make sense. Review: this is a disc that grows on you with each listen. The band as a whole is talented and very tight. The drumming is great and guitarist Michael Rank Jensen and keyboardist Olav Andersson are both impressive players. The songwriting is a bit derivative but if you’ve read any of my other reviews you’ll know that, for me, that is no great sin. I love music like this and if it borrows from Genesis, hey, no problem! Grand Stand plays some great music. (Progressive World)

Review: Hailing from the wild west coast of Canada, Greylevel crafts a unique blend of progressive and emotional rock music.
From humble beginnings as a solo studio project, Greylevel has since evolved into a full-fledged band. Brought together by shared passion for creating original music that aims to transport the listener into worlds of sound. Greylevel completed their debut album in 2006 and garnered the attention of ProgRock Records who shortly thereafter signed Greylevel and released Opus One internationally in January of 2007. Review: 'Raindance' is a progressive rock album by Gryphon, moving away from their earlier medieval work, originally released in 1975 by Transatlantic. It is the penultimate Gryphon album, and the last to include contributions from guitarist Graeme Taylor. Unusually for a Gryphon album, it contains a cover version (a pastoral rendering of The Beatles' "Mother Nature's Son").

Review: The new album is 70's sounding mixed with modern progressive indie rock. The overall picture is that 'Lamentations' is a little bit more Prog, described as 'Like the shorter, vocal oriented songs on a Beardfish album'. The end result has that special Rikard Sjöblom atmosphere in each and every track. The title came to life when realizing that almost every song dealt with some kind of misfortune in life, a lost childhood, lost opportunities or a lost love or even the death of loved ones: all in all, ten lamentations which together is the new Gungfly album. There is a bonus DVD featuring a concert from 2009 with the full Gungfly band including: Rikard Sjöblom, Tomas Van Der Kaaij, Sverker Magnusson, Rasmus Diamant & Petter Diamant.
