Review: MAGUS is something of an alchemist, fusing atmospheric soundscapes with progressive rock. Essentially a vehicle for guitarist/vocalist Andrew Robinson, the band's '90s output included drummer Steve Perkins and keyboardist Rue Yamauchi on the releases "Magus," "Traveller" and "Highway 375" (the latter featured songs based on Frank Herbert's Dune series, which had earlier inspired KLAUS SCHULZE). Following 2001's "The Green Earth" (which was augmented by flute and violin), Robinson emerged with a new set of collaborators on the concept album "The Garden." Often likened to PORCUPINE TREE, the music of MAGUS has cast its spell on listeners who like a little space in their progressive rock. (Prog Archives)

Review: Brilliantly played cinematic popmusic, imagine Elbow playing a soundtrack to a David Lynch movie.

After the adventurous 2006 freshman release of 'A Favor to the Muse' and 2009’s lush opus 'A Miraculous Container', MANDRAKE PROJECT has returned with its latest and most accessible release yet. The title couldn’t be more fitting. Almost immediately after the release of 'A Miraculous Container', the band continued studio work sporadically until the spring of 2010. Mandrake was initially slated to release a 6-song EP, but that idea expanded into finishing a new full-length record using individual song ideas from each member, much in the spirit of 'Ummagumma'. The result is a multi-dimensional experience drawing from all sides of the band’s catalogue utilizing influences as diverse as David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, Elbow, 10cc, Sigur Ros and The Arcade Fire.

Mandrake Project’s long-standing tradition of ornately composed cinematic anthems continues on 'Transitions', but the increasing and omnipresent vocal inclusion of John Schisler has created an opportunity for Mandrake’s instrumental prowess to cross into conventional pop/indie culture. For the first time in the band’s 9 year tenure, the human voice has moved to the forefront. Such a 'transition' has proven to be a challenging endeavour, but one that exposes Mandrake Project’s sound to a wider audience without sacrificing the integrity of thoughtful composition.

A number of songs still remain unfinished from the Transitions sessions. They, along with a host of new material will continue to be completed throughout 2011.

Rightly regarded as legends of progressive rock, the band have also continued to evolve and have been keen to embrace the possibilities of the internet, using innovative ways to interact with listeners resulting in an incredibly loyal legion of fans around the world. 1999's Marillion.com was one of first of these internet based promotions as the band used the web to ask for fans to send them passport pictures of themselves and 732 of these were then used to make up the artwork for the album. 5 of the 9 tracks were mixed by Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree. For this new Madfish edition, the album is packed in a deluxe 36 page digibook and the artwork has been re-worked by original designer Carl Glover. The book features unseen pictures not used in the original artwork.

Review: Progressive rock band MASTERMIND is back with their first full length album of original music in almost a decade. Since their formation in New Jersey by brothers Bill and Rich Berends in 1986 the band have become synonymous with delivering original sounding progressive rock with diverse arrangements and room for a healthy dose of experimentation. Once again the instrumentation is strong, Bill Berends guitar transcends numerous genres and combines with the keyboard interplay of Jens Johansson for a musically interesting package. “Insomnia” is the band’s seventh album and marks the album debut of vocalist Tracy McShane. The tracks have been built around McShane’s powerful vocals and focus more on songs as opposed to over the top instrumental play. As a result “Insomnia” is arguably the most accessible Mastermind album to date - yet a progression over the bands career can be heard continuing on “Insomnia” along with the elements considered to be Mastermind trademarks.

Review: Merchants Vice is a band which was formed around the nucleus of Les Wardle (Vocals), Mark English (Keyboards) & Chas Allen (Drums) late in 1997. These three musicians, who had previously all worked with other bands, came together as a result of their common interest in progressive music.

For some time the final two spaces in the lineup remained in a state of flux, but recently the compliment was rounded off with the addition of Nick Martin (Formally of Medicine Man) on guitars and Paul Brown (of Janison Edge) on bass. With this crew the band's first album, 'Amber', was recorded.

Anyone who grew up with British progressive music in the early 80's, and who still hankers after those heady days when anything seemed possible, should welcome this release by Merchants Vice. The sound is certainly familiar in this frame of reference, but gains enormously from the benefits of modern production techniques which give the sound a crisp and fresh edge. The fact that mixing and mastering of the CD have been carried out by Rob Aubrey has probably helped considerably here.

The overall sound does not seem to directly copy any one particular band, but rather has a form of it's own. Having said that it would be fair to say that there are some similarities to the likes of LaHost and Red Jasper along with some more obvious references to other bands of the genre.

Review: Metamorphosis - a short biography: Metamorphosis’ is a Swiss music project, the brainchild of Jean-Pierre Schenk, who is the composer of their four albums beginning in 2002. Warmly accepted around the world, the Pink Floyd inspired albums garnered rave reviews and accolades. Not content to continue in the same vein, Jean-Pierre took his time and composed 20 tracks for consideration on his new release, selecting the 8 very best to be presented to the world.

Dark is the forth release from Swiss multi-instrumentalist Jean-Pierre Schenk, marks a divergence from the heavily Pink Floyd inspired compositions that were on display with the previous releases. Dark, powerful, meditative, psychedelic, obsessing, with beautiful melodies, guitar and Moog solos, this is Metamorphosis new album.
