Barclay James Harvest

Barclay James Harvest

In 1966 two R & B bands local to Oldham (UK) merged to form a blues outfit THE BLUES KEEPERS. With sponsorship from a local businessman (also their manager) they rented an 18th century farmhouse where they practised extensively, gradually moving towards a progressive rock style then beginning to emerge. On turning professional the name BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST was adopted, and the line-up stabilised as JOHN LEES (guitars, vocals), LES HOLROYD (bass, rhythm guitar, vocals), STUART "WOOLLY" WOLSTENHOLME (keyboards, vocals) and MEL PRITCHARD (drums). After releasing their first single in April 1968, the band joined the legendary progressive HARVEST label, quickly expanding their musical horizons, chiefly by experimenting with longer evolving song structures and orchestrations. Initially this involved the use of woodwind, strings and brass before acquiring a MELLOTRON, but by the time of the release of their first album 'Barclay James Harvest' in 1970 they were employing an orchestra, the grandly titled BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA led by ROBERT GODFREY who later became a member of THE ENID.

Though producing some of their best melodic progressive work at this time, the orchestra proved to be too expensive and very nearly bankrupted the band, but in 1973 a move to the POLYDOR label saw an upturn in their fortunes. With increasing commercial success, their music began to develop towards simpler song structures with stronger arrangements which caused detractors to dub them 'The Poor Man's Moody Blues'! By 1979 WOOLLY left the band because he had become disillusioned that they had moved away from their Prog roots. They continued into the 1980s as a 3-piece augmented by hired musicians, and with a string of melodic AOR albums finally made a commercial break-through in Europe, particularly in Germany where they played several major outdoor concerts, beginning with a massive free concert on the steps of the historic Reichstag in August 1980.

By the end of the decade the band's popularity was starting to wane. In the 1990s, a traumatic court case and widening musical differences between band members took its toll. In 1998 the two songwriters HOLROYD and LEES agreed to go their separate ways while continuing to work under the umbrella of the old band name. Thus was born the two outfits which remain today: BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST FEATURING LES HOLROYD perseveres with the AOR style of their later work; while JOHN LEES' BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST (JLBJH) has returned to the more Prog orientated work of the 1970s, including working again with Woolly Wolstenholme. Sadly, MEL PRITCHARD passed away in 2004. (ProgArchives)

Track Listing: Summer Soldier / Medicine Man / Crazy City / After The Day / The Great 1974 Mining Disaster / Galadriel / Negative Earth / She Said / Paper Wings / For No One / Mockingbird

Review: Barclay James Harvest’s first live album was designed to draw a line under one stage in the band’s history, being in effect, a live “best of” album. Approval had to be given by EMI to include songs like “Mockingbird”, and this was written into the deal arranged between EMI and Polydor when BJH switched labels. Unfortunately, the Mellotron went haywire, ruining an otherwise excellent performance, so the Mellotron parts, and a few extra vocal harmonies, were re-recorded and dubbed later.

From listening to an original recording of the London show, it is possible to say with some degree of certainty that the majority of songs are from the London show, with the Liverpool recordings being 'Negative Earth', 'She Said' and, possibly, 'Paper Wings'. The album became BJH’s first UK chart entry, reaching number 40.

Review: Perhaps the crowning moment of Barclay James Harvest’s career, their legendary concert on the steps of the Rieschtag in Berlin on 30/08/1980 saw the band launched as superstars in continental Europe.

Performing next to the Berlin wall, the concert attracted an audience of 175,000 people and was later televised throughout Europe.

The resulting live album was the most successful Barclay James Harvest album to date in both the UK (where it remained a top twenty fixture for some weeks) and in Germany and Switzerland where it reached number one.

Adorned in a striking sleeve (designed by Pink Floyd artist Storm Thorgerson), the album features the wonderful 'John Lennon’s Guitar', 'Lady Macbeth', 'If Love is King', and 'Cheap the Bullet' together with the addition of three bonus tracks recorded live at The Town and Country Club in London in 1992.

Review: Following the highly successful 2006 tour by John Lees' BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST, keyboard player Woolly Wolstenholme completed work on his fourth studio album. A stunning work in a modern "progressive" style, it evokes the "classic" sound of BJH whilst adding a harder edge which is all Wolstenholme's own. The album also features a guest contributions from Viola player & Flautist Geoffrey Richardson (of CARAVAN & PENGUIN CAFÉ ORCHESTRA) and is certain to appeal to the followers of BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST.

Review: Remastered repackaged reissue with bonus tracks of Woolly Wolstenholme’s first solo album from 1980. Originally on Polydor, 'Maestoso' contains what many feel are some of his finest and most memorable tracks including ‘Prospect of Whitby’, ‘Patriots’ and ‘American Excess’.

Released almost immediately following his departure from Barclay James Harvest, this outstanding solo album oozes lush arrangements and oodles of Mellotron and was well loved by many of the BJH faithful and sold well both in the UK and Europe.

Review: Woolly Wolstenholme was the Mellotron and Keyboard genius of Barclay James Harvest from 1967 to 1979, and was responsible for the more epic and symphonic pieces recorded by the band. Upon leaving BJH in 1979 Woolly embarked on a solo career that saw an album release in 1980, 'Maestoso'.

Adopting this name for his new band, Woolly Wolstenholme embarked on the recording of a second solo album that was to have been called “Black Box”. Alas, the album never reached completion and no recordings saw the light of day for many years.

Woolly has compiled these recordings that were made for 'Black Box', together with three previously unreleased live recordings made in Vienna in 1981 with Maestoso. 'Black Box Recovered' finishes with a taste of Woolly’s new work with a studio demo of 'Bootham Park Elegy'.

Review: Studio album by Mellotron genius Woolly Wolstenholme and his band MÆSTOSO, best known for his work as a founder member of Barclay James Harvest.

From the bands formation until his departure in June 1979, Wolstenholme was responsible for the symphonic orchestral feel of much of Barclay James Harvest’s music. His mastery of the Mellotron, provided the band with a unique sound.

Review: The superb new studio album by Barclay James Harvest Mellotron genius Woolly Wolstenholme.

'One Drop In A Dry World' is both reminiscent of Woolly Wolstenholme's music with Barclay James Harvest, and that of contemporary influences. The album features a band comprising Steve Broomhead on lead guitar, and Craig Fletcher on bass, and drummer Kevin Whitehead, both of whom featured with Woolly Wolstenholme on the albums 'Nexus' and 'Revival' by Barclay James Harvest.

'One Drop In A Dry World' sees Woolly Wolstenholme make extensive use of the Mellotron, and is one of the most powerful albums to emerge from the Barclay James Harvest camp in years. Certain to appeal to the legions of Barclay James Harvest fans, 'One Drop In A Dry World' has gained praise from critics, not usually so kind.
